In July 2000, the Japanese American National Museum opened the first retrospective exhibition of Allen Say's art, titled "Allen Say's Journey: The Art and Words of a Children's Book Author." This unique and stunning exhibit opened Friday, July 28, 2000.

The old photograph being projected on the screen behind Allen is of the Mochida family in 1942. The photo was taken by Dorothea Lange as part of the WRA project. The family was in the process of being relocated to a concentration camp.

Allen is being interviewed by Carol Komatsuka, the vice president of external affairs at the Japanese American National Museum.

Hiroko Mochida, Allen Say, and Miyuki Hirano. A photograph (taken by Dorothea Lange) of Hiroko and Miyuki (which Say recreated in this image) was one of the inspirations for Say's latest book, Home of the Brave.
